Sales for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 ranked behind Nintendo Co.'s Wii in Jan. U.S. sales.
NPD Group Inc. this week said that the PS3 sold 203,000 units in Jan., while the Xbox 360 sold 309,000 units for the month.
By comparison, the Wii sold 680,000 units the same month to rank as the top selling game hardware in Jan.
Video game software sales increased 10 percent to $676.6 million while hardware sales moved up 17 percent to $445.4 million.
Sales of accessories gained 11 percent to $209.8 million.
Total industry sales reached $1.33 billion in Jan.
